Born among over-sized avocados and coral trees in the former Transkei, South Africa, Frances also spent sections of her childhood in London and Honduras. She has gone on to live in both Los Angeles and Kyoto. She speaks a few languages (English and Spanish the best and Afrikaans; isiXhosa; and Japanese badly).

She holds an MFA in Cinematography from the American Film institute, having come up  through the  camera department. Her work won Best Cinematography at Tribeca; was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and won the Grand Prix at Hollyshorts. Her work was also awarded both Gold and Silver screen at the Cannes YDA awards. She is an American Society of Cinematographers heritage award nominee; was selected as 1 of 5 DPs in Film Independent's project Involve; and was selected as part of Berlinale talents 2025. She is a member of the South African Society of Cinematographers.

She is most recently interested in the impressions left between two entities and how they are decomposed by time.
